Sightseeing in and around Pahalgam

Baisaran Situated at a distance of about 5 Km from Pahalgam is the lush green meadow of Baisaran surrounded by thickly wooded forests of pine. Picturesque view of the snow-clad mountains on the back is a spectacle to the eye. The beauty of the place is comparable to some of the best known European resort and has been the shooting place for some well known Bollywood movies, including Kumar Gaurav starrer ‘Love Story’.
You have to trek to Baisaran on foot or can hire a pony to reach this undulating meadow. It is one of the easiest and friendly treks. Now, there is even a forest road to Baisaran and you could try and drive up there. Beware that there are portions on the forest road where you may encounter a stream or two, with small boulders, and even some steep curves.
The snow covered Tulian Lake at an altitude of 3353 m is 11 Km upward trek from Baisaran. The trek is a real challenging one as some of the heights are steep and there is no trek trail. It is advisable to take experienced guide or go with local poly wallahs hiring their pony. But once you reach Tulian and touch the water of the lake, you will definitely forget all your hardship in reaching the place. You will be amazed by the beauty of the place. The lake remains mostly covered with snow all the throughout the year, except in summer months.
Aru The charming and beautiful meadow of Aru is at a distance of about 11 Km from Pahalgam. Walking or riding a pony upstream along the River Lidder through some picturesque locality will take you to the meadow of Aru, bordered on one side by a ravine of the Lidder River. One can also hire a local car and reach Aru by the main track, which is on the left bank of the river.

Apart from enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the golden-green meadow, the other major attraction of tourism in Aru is trekking. Some of the popular treks of this region are those of Lidderwat meadow, Kolahoi Glacier, Tarsar Lake, Marsar Lake, Aru- Sind Valley trek over Sunmos Pass or Yamhor Pass.
Betab Valley - Named after the super hit Bollywood movie Betaab, in which Sunny Deol, son of Dharmendra made his debut, Betaab Valey is indeed a romantic destination often regarded as a “Dream Valley”. Apart from being a favourite destination for shooting of Bollywood movies, Aru is also a world famous tourist resort where tourists from around the world flock in large number. Located at an altitude of about 2530 m above sea level and at a distance of about 7 Km from Pahalgam, the picturesque valley of Aru has been the shooting place of several Hindi and regional movies other than the Betaab. Recently, Superstar Ranbir Kapoor, son of Rishi Kapoor has done shooting for his film Rockstar in Betaab valley.

The Valley of Betaab is surrounded by snow covered mountains peaks, dense Pine and Deodar forests with River Sheshnaag originating from Sheshnaag Lake, flowing majestically through it. The river flows down to join River Lidder just 7 Km below At Pahalgham. Clusters of Willows tossing each other in wind are lined on the banks of Sheshnaag River and create an alluring atmosphere.
Golf Course The nine-hole golf course of Pahalgam at an altitude of about 2400 m above sea level is an extremely popular sightseeing destination for every tourists, wheather he plays golf or not. The awesome beauty of the place will definitely make one spell bound. With snow-capped mountain at the back, carpet of green grass below foot and forest of Pine and Deodar all around, it is undoubtedly one of the most scenic and picturesque golf courses of the world.

Hajan On the way to Chandanwari from Pahalgam is Hajan, a popular shooting location for several Hindi and regional movies. Regular film viewers will definitely recognize the place. Not only for tourists visiting Pahalgam, even pilgrims and tourists visiting the holy shrines of Amarnath Caves, make it a point to spent some time at Hajan.
Mamaleshwara Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient temple dating back to 5th century is believed to be the oldest existing temple of Kashmir. Situated in the Mamal village on the bank of Lidder River, major portion of the temple is in ruins today. How to reach Pahalgam?

By Air – Pahalgam does not have its own airport. Airport at Srinagar at a distance of about 95 Km is the nearest airhead from Pahalgam. This airport at Srinagar is well connected by regular flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore. Regular flights of Air India, Air India-IC, Go Air, Go Business, IndiGo, Jet Airways Konnect, Jet Airways, JetLite, Kingfisher Red, Kingfisher and Spicejet lands here.
Satwari airport at Jammu at a distance of about 160 Km is the second nearest airport of Pahalgam. This airport is very well connected with almost all the major cities of India.
By Rail – Pahalgam does not have a railway station of its own. The nearest railway station from Pahalgam is at Jammu, at a distance of about 240 Km. Jammu is well connected with all the major cities of the country. Jammu can also be reached from Delhi by numerous trains which ply between the two cities at regular intervals throughout the day. One can reach Pahalgam from railway station by taxis or buses.
By Road – One can reach Pahalgam from Jammu and Srinagar as well. Special luxurious buses will also be available from Jammu and Srinagar to Pahalgam. Super deluxe, A-class, B-class busses operated by J&K SRTC as well as other transport agencies takes around 10 – 11 hours to reach Pahalgam from Jammu, while it takes 3 – 4 hours to reach Pahalgam from Srinagar.
If you intend to travel by your own car, take to National Highway 1-A, connecting Srinagar with Jammu, and on reaching Anantnag turn right if you are traveling from Jammu or turn left if you are traveling from Srinagar to reach Pahalgam.

Where is Kalpa?

The little known hill town of Kalpa is located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh in North India and is at a distance of about 265 Km from Shimla.

How to reach Kalpa?

Reaching Kalpa is a hard and strained journey. In the winter months one can not reach Kalpa as the place receive heavy snowfall and the roads virtually remain covered with snow.
By Air – Airport at Shimla at a distance of about 267 Km is the nearest airport of Kalpa. From the airport buses are available to reach Kalpa. One can also hire vehicles to reach Kalpa.

Lal Tibba – This is the highest point of Mussoorie and is the oldest inhabited place of this charming hill town. The buildings and architecture of this place speaks of its British connection and colonial past. Jwalaji Temple – Perched at an altitude of 2104 m above sea level on the top of Beong Hill is the Jwalaji temple. This temple at a distance of about 9 Km from the Mussoorie town is dedicated to Goddesses Durga and an important Hindu pilgrimage destination. The temple is surrounded by thick forests and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks, Doon valley and Yamuna valley.
Camel’s Back Road – This is a 3 Km long walking trail starting from Kulri Bazaar near Rink Hall and ending at Library Bazaar. The road is named after a natural rock here that resembles a camel’s hump. The place is ideal for taking a walking trail or riding a horse and enjoying the refreshing beauty of the nature. Couples and honeymooner’s walking with their beloved, hand-in-hand is the most usual sight. The picturesque setting enhances the romanticism in every heart and makes the walk a real memorable one. The entire stretch is lined with thick Deodar trees on one side and the other side is an open expanse that looks down across the stretch of Doon Valley and the mountains in the distance. Taxi services are available from airport to Mussoorie and it costs about Rs 1500.

Katarmal Sun Temple – This 800 year old temple perched at an altitude of 2116 m above sea level is at a distance of about 17 Km from Almora. The temple dedicated to Sun god was built by Katarmalla, a Katyuri king in the 9th century A.D. The temple complex has one main temple, surrounded by 45 smaller shrines. The temple though in ruins stands as a testament of the bygone era. One needs to walk through forest to reach the temple. The temple is noted for its magnificent architecture, artistically made stone and metallic sculptures and beautifully carved pillars and wooden doors. Tourists visiting Almora definitely make it a point to visit this temple of Sun God.

Dapoli is located in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. This scenic town situated on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra is about 200 Km from Pune and 240 Km from Mumbai.

Suvarnadurg Fort – Located at a distance of 17 Km from Dapoli, it consists of two forts, – Kanakdurga the land fort and Suvarnadurga the sea fort. The forts were originally built by Adil Shah and later captured and fortified by Chatrapati Shivaji in 1660. During the days of Shivaji the twin fort of Suvarnadarga was extremely important from military point of view.

The two forts were once inter connected by tunnels. But at present no tunnel connection is there and the only way to reach the sea fort of Suvarnadurga is by boat. The exotic location of this fort has made it a popular tourist destination. This island fort stand close to Harne Port is surrounded from all side by the lashing waves of the Arabian Sea.
Unhavare – Located at a distance of about 20 Km from Dapoli, the place is famous for its natural hot water sulphur spring. Known to cure various skin ailments, the place is visited by large number of tourists as well as local people every day. There are separate shelters for men and women to take a dip in the rejuvenating hot water.
Murud Beach – At a distance of about 10 Km from Dapoli, the Murud Beach is one of the loveliest beaches of the Konkan coast. The vast expansion of white sandy beach and the crystal clear bluish water at Murud is a delight to watch. Fenced by the green palm trees, this pristine beach will arouse the imagination of any visitor. Watching the sun rising through the mountains in the east is indeed a remarkable sight. Sunset in the back ground of the brilliant forts also provides a fabulous setting. This virgin beach on the coast of Arabian Sea has become a popular tourist destination in recent years.
Panhalekaji Caves – This rock cut caves are situated deep in the valley near the confluence of Kotjai and Dhakti rivers. There are a total of 29 caves both big and small spread along the river bank. These historical manmade caves are believed to be more than 1000 years old and are the finest examples of our rich ancient culture and architecture. There are sculptures of Ganesh, Saraswati and scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana on the walls. The place is among the must visit spot for visitors visiting Dapoli. The carvings on the wall of these caves and jungle covered mountains on both side along the river creates a unique combination hard to find anywhere else.
Chandika Mata temple near the cave is another tourist attraction nearby. This temple from the Pandava period is inside a natural cave and one have to go inside through a tunnel to take the darshan of the Chandika Mata idol inside the cave.

Kadyawarcha Ganapati – This temple of Lord Ganesha located at Anjarle village is another major attraction around Dapoli. The unique idol of Lord Ganesha having the trunk curved toward right is considered to be highly auspicious and hence pilgrims and tourists from place far and near visits the temple in large number throughout the year. A stone staircase on the right side leading to the top of the temple provides commanding view of the surrounding coconut and betel nut trees, the nearby Suvarnadurg Fort, the Arabian Sea and surrounding hills.

The monastery follows the Nyingma Order of Tibet Buddhism and controls all other monasteries of that Order in Sikkim. The monks of Pemayangtse Monastery enjoys the unique privilege of performing all royal ceremonies.
Located at the top of a hill, the monastery has many traditional collections of Buddhist statues, traditional paintings, wooden masks and ritual texts. At the top floor there is beautiful wooden replica of Zangdog Palri the celestial adobe of Guru Padmasambhava and is the main attraction of the Monastery. This colorful and beautiful piece is kept inside a big glass box for preservation.
Sangacholing Monastery – Built in 1697, it is one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim and is situated on a steep hilltop above the famous Pemayangtse Monastery. To reach the Monastery one has to walk on steep hilly slope through thick forest. The Sangacholing Monastery located with a scenic backdrop is a rich storehouse of valuable artifacts like wall paintings, scriptures, statues, etc. The monastery also offers splendid views of the snow peaks of the Himalayas and is extremely popular among tourists. Believed to have been designed and built designed by the late Dongzin Rimpoche over five years the monastery is considered sacred by the followers of the Nyingmapa sect of Buddhism.

Khecheopalri Lake – Located at a distance of about 25 Km from Pelling, this sacred lake is one of the major tourist attraction of this hill resort. Also known as the ‘Wishing Lake’ this pristine lake with sparkling blue waters, is a pilgrimage spot sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. Strangely, not a single leaf is seen floating on its waters. Legend has it that all day long, the birds of the forest dutifully pick them up.
This scenic lake surrounded by prayer flags is covered with rich, dense forest is an excellent site for bird watching as well. The lake can be reached by walking through the forest area for nearly 25 minutes and provides an excellent opportunity to have a feel of the pristine nature.
Kanchenjunga Waterfall – At a distance of about 25 Km from Pelling is the Kanchenjunga Waterfall, one of the largest waterfalls in Sikkim. Falling from a height of about 300 ft, this massive fall is placed between a magnificent carve of two hills. The fall is extremely popular among tourists and is a major sightseeing destination from Pelling. The place is rich in natural beauty and lush vegetation making it a prime tourist attraction.

Singshore Bridge - located in Dentam Uttarey Road at a distance of about 25 Km from Pemayangtse monastery, this hanging bridge is a piece of mechanical marvel and is a prime tourist attraction. The downward view from the bridge is a mind boggling experience with the sight of beautiful waterfalls.

This beautiful monastery also houses a temple of Lord Buddha and residential quarters for the monks. It is one of the most important centers of the Lamaistic faith of Mahayana Buddhism and is extremely popular among tourists visiting Bomdila.
Craft Centre – This is another major tourist attraction of Bomdila. The craft centre has a delightful range of hand-woven carpets, woven by the local Monpa tribe. Superbly designed dragon carpets that are on sale are a huge hit among tourists. Also produced at the centre are traditional wall hangings, paintings and masks presenting the wondrous artistic skills of the locales.
