About Chandigarh
Chandigarh – one of the most beautiful, modern and happening cities of India has grown into a major tourist destination over the years. The city derives its name from Goddess Chandi whose temple is on Chandigrh-Kalka road, a few kilometers away from Chandigarh. Apart from serving as the gateway to the beautiful hills of Himachal, Chandigarh has its own appeal as an important tourist destination manifested in the architectural marvel of Capitol Complex, unique Rock Garden, well-maintained Rose Garden, man-made Sukhna Lake, Sector 17 Shopping Centre and many more.
The young-at-heart, fast-growing and progressive city of Chandigarh shows an outstanding brilliancy of planning. Divided into 47 sectors each intertwined by well knit roads. Shopping malls and busy markets characterize every sector. It’s carefully set out parks, awesome buildings, concourses and streets flanked by continuous line up of trees and bushes make Chandigarh a dream destination
The vibrant city of Chandigarh was the dream city of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. After the partition of 1947, the region of Punjab was split between India and Pakistan. The newly formed Indian state of Punjab required new capital as the earlier capital became part of Pakistan. This necessitates the setting up of a new city. At the behest of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru, American architect-planner Albert Mayer working with the Poland-born architect Matthew Nowicki prepared the initial master plan of the city of Chandigarh. But it is the French (born Swiss) architect and urban planner, Le Corbusier who is credited for planning, designing and executing the setting up of the city of Chandigarh in 1950’s.
