Mussoorie – popularly known as the “Queen of the Hills” is a charming hill station of North India. The beauty of this hill town lures thousands of domestic and international tourists every year making it one of the most popular hill stations of India. Mussoorie is situated at an average altitude of about 1880 m above sea level, in the Garhwal Hills. This extraordinarily beautiful hill town with its cool salubrious climate and awesome scenic beauty has been one of the most popular and preferred holiday destinations among tourists over the years. Mussoorie is also a Gateway to the “Gangotri” and the “Yamunotri” shrines, which are two important Hindu pilgrimage destinations.

Mussoorie was discovered by Captain Young, an adventurous military officer of the East India Company somewhere between 1820 and 1827. Soon after that Mussoorie became one of the most favourite destination for British officers and higher government officials of British East India Company.

Apart from the normal tourists who visit Mussoorie to escape the sultry heat of the summer, honeymooners throng the place in large number as well. Many honeymoon couples visit Mussoorie every year and takes away with them the most memorable and undying moments. In recent years Mussoorie has seen a major rise in tourist influx during winter months as well.

Towards Gun Hill by ropeway

Gun Hill

Undoubtedly the most popular sightseeing spot of Mussoorie is Gun Hill. Tourist visiting this hill station definitely makes it to Gun hill which is the second highest point of Mussoorie. Reaching Gun hill by rope-way is sheer fun and adventure. The thrill of the 400 m long journey by rope-way can’t be described in words. One can also trek to Gun hill to have a close encounter with nature.

Gun Hill offers a breathtaking view of the snow-packed Himalayan ranges namely Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara and Gangotri group etc. and a bird’s eye view of Mussoorie town and Doon Valley.

Kempty Fall

Located at a distance of about 15 Km from the Mussoorie town, Kempty fall is another major attraction of Mussoorie. The credit of developing it as a tourist destination goes to John Mekinan. Surrounded by high mountain ranges and located at a high altitude of about 4500 feet, the falls offer a breathtaking view as the water falling down from a high altitude of 40 feet splits further into five more streams. Apart from taking a bath in its refreshingly cold water, tourists can simply enjoy its beauty taking a sip in hot brewing tea found in the tea stalls nearby.

Lal Tibba

This is the highest point of Mussoorie and is the oldest inhabited place of this charming hill town. The buildings and architecture of this place speaks of its British connection and colonial past. Exquisite view of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Banderpunch and other Himalayan ranges from this place through the Japanese telescope installed in 1967 is the main attraction of the place. Panoramic view of the surroundings that one can have from this place makes it worth a visit.

Mussoorie Lake

Situated on Mussoorie-Dehradun road at a distance of about 6 km from Mussoorie is the Mussoorie Lake, a delightful picnic spot. Apart from offering boating (pedaled boat) facilities to the tourists the place is also known for enchanting view of Doon Valley and nearby villages. The place has been developed by the city board and Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority.

Jwalaji Temple

Perched at an altitude of 2104 m above sea level on the top of Beong Hill is the Jwalaji temple. This temple at a distance of about 9 Km from the Mussoorie town is dedicated to Goddesses Durga and an important Hindu pilgrimage destination. The temple is surrounded by thick forests and offers a panoramic view of the Himalayan peaks, Doon valley and Yamuna valley.

Camel’s Back Road

This is a 3 Km long walking trail starting from Kulri Bazaar near Rink Hall and ending at Library Bazaar. The road is named after a natural rock here that resembles a camel’s hump. The place is ideal for taking a walking trail or riding a horse and enjoying the refreshing beauty of the nature. Couples and honeymooner’s walking with their beloved, hand-in-hand is the most usual sight. The picturesque setting enhances the romanticism in every heart and makes the walk a real memorable one. The entire stretch is lined with thick Deodar trees on one side and the other side is an open expanse that looks down across the stretch of Doon Valley and the mountains in the distance. The place offers exquisite view of the sunset as well.

Camel’s Back is also popular for restaurants, especially the Revolving Restaurant that offers a delicious array of multi-cuisine dishes while giving you a slow, 360-degree view of the mountains, if you sit there long enough.

There are quite a few other places in and around Mussoorie that are worth a visit as well. Some of them are : Nag Devta Temple, Surkhanda Devi Temple, Sir George Everest House, Jharipani Fall, Bhatta Fall, Mossy Fall, Municipal Garden and quite a few others.

How to reach Mussoorie?

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun is at a distance of about 60 km is the nearest airport of Mussoorie. Presently, the airport is serviced by only one airline – Simplify Deccan (earlier Air Deccan). It operates flights on three days of the week, – Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Taxi services are available from airport to Mussoorie and it costs about Rs 1500.

By Rail

Mussoorie does not have a direct rail link. Dehradun Railway station serves for Mussoorie too. This station is linked which Superfast trains to other major cities in country.

In fact, it is the Northern Railway terminus, which has trains to all major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Varanasi, Amritsar, Saharanpur, Haridwar, Ujjain, Rishikesh, Allahabad and Indore.

By Road

Mussoorie is well connected by roads to other major cities in Uttaranchal state as well as to the cities of other states in the country.
