Patnitop – lesser known hill destination near Jammu

Patnitop – is a relatively lesser known hill station near Jammu which has all the elements of becoming a popular tourist destination. In recent years Patnitop is witnessing large influx of tourists throughout the year because it is one such place near Jammu in the lower ranges of Pir Panjal where there is ample opportunity for adventure sports like skiing, trekking, rock climbing, paragliding etc. Patnitop’s long natural walking trails, dense woods of pine and deodars, views of the Chenab Basin and thick snow sheets in winter attract tourists in large numbers.

Where is Patnitop?

The hill station of Patnitop is located in the Udhampur district of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir at a distance of just 112 Km from Jammu on the Jammu – Srinagar Highway (NH1A).

Situated amidst picturesque surroundings, the hill station of Patnitop lies at an altitude of 2,024 m above sea level in the Lower Himalayan Ranges of the Pir Panjal Mountain. This relatively unknown hill destination as compared to the other tourist spots of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is no less beautiful or serene. Patnitop is a secluded hill station where you will not find maddening rush of tourist and hence will be able to discover yourself in a unique sense of oneness with nature. The hill station of Patnitop is basically a meadow built on an irregular, more or less flattened plateau, with River Chenab flowing close by. Low rolling hills covered with tall Pine and Deodar surrounds this meadow and adds to the beauty of the place. The natural beauty, dense pine forests and flourishing green landscape of this hill resort makes Paptnitop as one of the most sought after destination in recent years.

Once in Patnitop, just sitting under the sun in the green meadow dotted with tall conifers can be the highlight of one’s holiday. In winter (mid Dec. to mid Feb.), the hill resort of Patnitop remains covered with snow, thus providing opportunities for various winter sports including amateur skiing. A 9-hole golf course lures tourists to Patnitop in summers. For the adventure lovers, there are a number of amazing trekking options near Patnitop. Paragliding is also on offer for those interested. The months from May to June and September to October are best for paragliding. Other aero sports like parasailing and hot-air ballooning are also very popular here. Patnitop also boasts of three freshwater springs, with ice-cold water and said to have medicinal properties.

This 600 year old temple dedicated to the Snake God is the most popular and most visited sightseeing destination of Patnitop. In fact it would not be an exaggeration to say that Patnitop first came into prominence due to this ancient Hindu temple which is according to mythological belief is considered to be the place where the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati was held. Erected amidst lush green surroundings, this wooden temple is indeed an awe-inspiring experience.

Though this Naag Temple is a popular sightseeing attraction throughout the year, yet during the occasion of Naag Panchami Festival thousands of devotees visit the place to pay their homage to the goddesses and pray for happiness and well being of their family. A grand fair is also held during the festival that adds to the charm and colour to the festival.

Madhatop

Perched at an altitude of 2024 m above sea level, Madhatop is another popular sightseeing destination of Patnitop. The place is just about 5 Km trek away from Patnitop and is accessible by road as well. Surrounded by tall Cedars, Madhatop is situated on the Patnitop-Sansar Road and is an all weather sightseeing destination of Patnitop. Enveloped in thick snow during winters, Madhatop offers a mid-level-challenge skiing experience and hence is a good option for adventure sports lovers near Jammu. Madhatop is the right place to learn non-competitive skiing. Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department organizes skiing courses for beginners every year.

Sanasar

Situated at an altitude of 2050 m from sea level and a distance of about 17 Km from Patnitop is the lush green cup-shaped meadows of Sanasar. Not only is Sanasar a popular sightseeing destination of Patnitop, but is also known to be the hub for adventure sport activities in the Jammu region.

For adventure sports enthusiasts Sanasar is indeed a perfect place to visit as it offers wide opportunities for parasailing, paragliding, hot air ballooning, horse riding, trekking, rock climbing and camping facilities as well. Taking advantage of the undulations, a section of the meadows has been developed into a six-hole golf course which is now being upgraded into a nine-hole one. This golf course is contributing largely in making Sanasar popular and giving it a permanent place in the tourist map. Visiting Sanasar on a day tour can be rewarding experience hard to forget in a lifetime.

How to reach Patnitop?

By Air

The hill town of Patnitop is at a distance of about 120 km from Jammu airport. The airport at Jammu is well connected with all the major airport of the country. Regular and frequent flights are available from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai to reach Jammu within a few hours. From Jammu airport one can easily reach Patnitop within 3 hours by hiring a car or other vehicles of his or her choice.

By Train

Railway station at Jammu is the nearest railhead of Patnitop at a distance of about 112 Km. Jammu Railway station is very well connected with all the major railway stations of the country. Apart from regular buses one can easily hire private vehicles of his or her own choice and need from Jammu railway station to reach Patnitop within 3 hours.

By Road

Patnitop lies on the national highway NH1A and hence is easily accessible from places like Jammu, Katra, Udhampur, Srinagar and other important places of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining states. From all the above places there are regular buses, both private and public, and private vehicles as well.
